From Drones to Consumer Robotics: Reinvent Engineering Education

Abstract

Society certainly will be shaped by technology-driven innovation for the coming decades, and the biggest challenge is that we will need many more innovators. To address this challenge, we believe in starting with education. Education has the greatest influence on the innovative capacities of young people. There is no doubt that our education system at all levels needs radical change for more innovators to emerge. I will share the exploration of engineering education with real examples, from drones to consumer robotics.

Biography

Prof. Zexiang Li attended the South-Central University in 1978, received his BS (with honor) degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1983, his MS degree in EECS in 1985, MA in mathematics and PhD in EECS in 1989, all from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1992, he joined the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and is currently a professor of the department. He founded the Automation Technology Center (ATC) and Robotics Institute (RI). He is also the founder of XbotPark and Shenzhen InnoX Academy.
In 2019, Prof. Li was selected as co-recipient of the 2019 IEEE Robotics and Automation Award for his influential “contributions to the development of civilian drones, aerial imaging technology, robotics engineering advancement, innovation and entrepreneurship.”
